Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you encounter situations so awful that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer magnitude of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping mechanism.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You start ruminating about the nature of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?

The tsunami struck suddenly, destroying entire cities in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like sandcastles, and the chaos that ensued was deafening. Awful Day Ever
It all started with a case of morning hair. I couldn't do it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedover and dropped my lunch all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally late for school.
I sweating. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. Everything. I couldn'tconcentrate.
By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled check here on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
